ISS Under-Vehicle Inspection Solution Leveraged by NYC Transit Agencies as Part of ‘Transit Tech Lab’

 
Project Needs and Problems
The Transit Tech Lab initiative aimed to enhance security and operational efficiency across New York regional transit infrastructure by integrating advanced under-vehicle and under-train surveillance systems. The challenge was to deploy ISS’s SecurOS® UVSS and UTSS technologies to detect explosives, contraband, and mechanical defects, while providing real-time data on vehicle flows and checkpoint efficiency. The project required seamless integration with existing infrastructure at high-traffic locations, such as the World Trade Center and NJ TRANSIT facilities, and had to accommodate diverse use cases across multiple transit agencies to improve overall safety, resilience, and maintenance processes.

Woodbridge, N.J., Sept. 30th, 2024 – ISS (Intelligent Security Systems), a leading global provider of video intelligence and data awareness solutions, announced today that its industry-leading under-vehicle and under-train surveillance solutions were recently tested by several New York regional transit agencies as part of an initiative designed to improve climate resilience across regional transit infrastructure.  

The program, dubbed the “Transit Tech Lab,” is a public-private partnership created by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the Partnership Fund for New York City to accelerate innovation in public transportation. Among the partner agencies who took part in the initiative include the MTA, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, NJ TRANSIT, and the NYC Department of Transportation (NYC DOT).  

Though 150 companies applied to take part in the program, only 18 were ultimately selected as finalists to move forward in an eight-week proof of concept (PoC) phase. Read the full report here.  

Beginning in May 2024, ISS worked with the Port Authority to demonstrate how our SecurOS® UVSS (Under Vehicle Surveillance System) could enhance the current screening process for vehicles entering the World Trade Center (WTC). Over the course of three weeks, the UVSS was used to scan the undercarriage of more than 2,000 cars for various anomalies, while also providing information about vehicle types, vehicle flows, and average checkpoint passage times.  

Additionally, we also worked with NJ TRANSIT and Long Island Rail Road to determine how our SecurOS® Under Train Surveillance System (UTSS) could be used to detect defects lurking underneath railcar carriages and demonstrated the results to NJ TRANSIT and Long Island Rail Road.

About the UVSS

The UVSS is a compact solution designed to screen the undercarriage of vehicles for explosives, illegal contraband, damages/anomalies, and other prohibited items. The system includes both hardware and software that provide high-quality image scans. In addition to providing undercarriage scans, the UVSS can also be integrated with LPR and access control systems to provide a total solution for vehicle ingress and egress. An optional SecurOS® Driver Camera can be installed in conjunction with the UVSS for applications that require identity verification for persons entering the premises.

About the Transit Tech Lab 

The Transit Tech Lab launched in 2018 in partnership with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to apply new technology solutions to address critical transit challenges.
