How ISS is helping KSA protect its extensive land borders by deploying a comprehensive suite of video intelligence technologies
The Customer
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia manages one of the Middle East’s most critical and extensive land border networks, sharing borders with UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, and Yemen. To secure these high-traffic routes across harsh deserts, KSA partnered with Intelligent Security Systems (ISS) to implement a unified solution, integrating advanced license plate and facial recognition with undercarriage screening to create efficient, well-protected border checkpoints.
The Challenge
Securing such a vast and varied border network presents unique logistical and environmental challenges. Traditional manual inspections create bottlenecks and leave room for human error. Authorities required a comprehensive modernization effort with three primary objectives:
- Boost Situational Awareness: Detect threats rapidly across high-risk checkpoints and remote transit routes.
- Automate Identification: Streamline vehicle and human identification processes to support real-time interdiction and intelligence gathering.
- Unify Operations: Consolidate all border security operations under a centralized command system equipped with integrated analytics and automated alerting.
The Solution
To meet these demanding objectives, ISS engineered and deployed a multi-layered security ecosystem across the KSA’s borders.
1. Vehicle Undercarriage Screening
To strengthen security without disrupting traffic flow, ISS deployed the SecurOS® UVSS (Under-Vehicle Surveillance Solution) at two major crossings: the Ar-Ruqi Gate (bordering Kuwait) and the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali) crossing (bordering Oman). These units are tightly integrated with license plate databases to cross-check vehicle identities instantly.
- Key Features: Full undercarriage scans in under three seconds, high-resolution imaging, AI-assisted anomaly and foreign object detection, and extreme durability designed for heavy loads and punishing desert heat.
2. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)
SecurOS® Motus ANPR cameras were installed at strategic land routes bordering neighboring countries. Powered by deep learning, these cameras continuously capture and interpret plate data in both directions.
- Key Capabilities: The system automatically logs every vehicle, matches plates against international watchlists, and triggers immediate alerts for suspect vehicles. The cameras are also designed to operate under challenging conditions—such as intense heat, blowing sand, and poor lighting.
3. Facial Recognition Cameras
Complementing the vehicle-focused technology, ISS deployed numerous SecurOS® Motus VO21 cameras across mixed-traffic crossings bordering neighboring countries.
- Intelligence & Verification: These highly precise driver cameras capture faces through vehicle windshields, enabling real-time biometric identity verification, cross-referencing with national immigration databases, and providing instant alerts on individuals of interest.
4. Centralized Command & Operational Integration
The true power of the deployment lies in its unified Command and Control System. This centralized platform aggregates live data feeds from the UVSS, ANPR, and facial recognition cameras. It correlates data from the most remote desert routes to the busiest checkpoints, empowering national security teams with automated watchlist matching, historical trend tracking, and command-wide incident alerts.
The Results
The KSA land border modernization initiative fundamentally transformed regional security, yielding immediate and measurable outcomes:
- Improved Detection Rates: AI-driven inspections and biometric checks reduced the risk of concealed threats and unauthorized entry.
- Enhanced Situational Awareness: Real-time data gives personnel the visibility to make quick, informed decisions during high border activity.
- Operational Efficiency: Automating routine inspections reduced manual workload, allowing agents to focus on high-risk and secondary cases.
- Scalable Security Architecture: The modular SecurOS® platform allows border security to scale and integrate new technologies as the Kingdom grows.
By shifting from manual checkpoints to an automated, AI-powered security network, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia set a new global standard for border protection. ISS provided a solution that stops severe threats in their tracks while keeping vital trade corridors moving freely.
